OpenClaw vs Claude Cowork: an agent you own, or a product you rent?

Claude Cowork is Anthropic’s polished, closed agent — it lives inside the Claude apps, runs on Claude models only, and is included with paid Claude plans. OpenClaw is free, open-source software you run yourself — it lives on a machine you control, works with any model provider, and talks to you through the messaging apps you already use. Choose Cowork if you want a managed product from one vendor; choose OpenClaw if you want an agent you own.
What each one actually is
Claude Cowork shipped generally on April 9, 2026 as the agentic mode of the Claude Desktop app, and by July 2026 it had expanded to web and mobile with cloud sessions that keep running after you close your laptop. It plans and executes multi-step work across your files and tools, can drive your screen (“computer use”), runs scheduled tasks, and is included on every paid Claude plan — Pro at $20/mo ($17 annual) through Max at $100–200/mo. It is a product, in the best and worst senses: excellent defaults, no assembly, and no way to look inside or move it somewhere Anthropic doesn’t run it.
OpenClaw is an MIT-licensed open-source agent stewarded by the non-profit OpenClaw Foundation. There is no product to subscribe to: you install the software on a computer — your own machine or a server — and it becomes a persistent agent you message from Telegram, WhatsApp, and twenty-plus other channels. It brings no model of its own; you connect OpenAI, OpenRouter, Anthropic, or local models, and you can switch providers without losing the agent, its memory, or its workspace.

The provider-risk point, made concrete
2026 supplied a live demonstration of the structural difference. In April, Anthropic blocked Claude subscriptions from powering third-party agents like OpenClaw on cost grounds, then partially walked it back over the following two months — the full whiplash timeline is here. Cowork users were untouched, because Cowork is the first-party agent those economics were built for. OpenClaw users rode it out by pointing the same agent at different model access. Neither experience is wrong, but they are different bets: Cowork bets on one vendor’s roadmap; OpenClaw bets on owning the agent and treating models as swappable.
How to choose
Pick Cowork if you’re already paying for Claude, you want an agent for desk-work sessions — files, documents, research — and you value zero setup over control. Pick OpenClaw if you want an always-on agent that messages you first, remembers everything in files you own, and survives vendor policy changes. The honest cost of that ownership is operations: OpenClaw needs a computer that stays on, kept secure and updated — which you can do yourself on a VPS, or hand to hosting that runs OpenClaw for you so the agent is set up, secured, and backed up from the first minute.
